​ 인빅투스(Invictus): 굴하지 않는; 정복되지 않는(Unconquered; undefeated)

나를 덮고 있는 어둠의 밤에  

세상은 칠흑같이 깜깜하고

난 그 어떤 신이건, 신에게 감사한다.

내게 결코 굴하지 않는 영혼을 주셨음을.

잔인하고 가혹한 환경 속에서도

나는 굴하거나 소리내어 울지 않았다. 

운명의 몽둥이에 두들겨 맞아도

내 머리에서 피가 흘러도 나는 결코 굴하지 않노라.

분노와 눈물로 피범벅이 된 이 땅을 넘어

공포의 그림자만이 어렴풋이 보인다.

아직도 재앙의 시간이 계속되지만

나는 결코 두려움에 떨지 않을 것이다. 

제 아무리 천국의 문이 좁다 해도

더 많은 형벌이 나를 기다릴지라도

나는 내 운명의 주인이요,

내 영혼의 캡틴(선장)이다.

Out of the night that covers me,  
      Black as the pit from pole to pole,  
I thank whatever gods may be 
      For my unconquerable soul.  

In the fell clutch of circumstance 
      I have not winced nor cried aloud.  
Under the bludgeonings of chance 
      My head is bloody, but unbowed.  

Beyond this place of wrath and tears 
      Looms but the Horror of the shade, 
And yet the menace of the years 
      Finds and shall find me unafraid.  

It matters not how strait the gate, 
      How charged with punishments the scroll, 
I am the master of my fate, 
      I am the captain of my soul.
